Writing a clear topic sentence for a paragraph – English 3AC

Build a paragraph around one clear main idea rather than listing unrelated sentences.

1. State the main idea

A topic sentence tells the reader what the paragraph will develop. It includes a topic and a focus: «Our school garden helps pupils learn about plants». It is more useful than a very broad statement such as «Gardens exist».

2. Support the focus

The following sentences explain, illustrate or support the topic sentence. If the focus is learning about plants, details about observing seeds and watering fit; a sentence about a football result does not.

3. Revise the scope

Avoid claims too broad to support in one paragraph. A topic sentence is often near the beginning in a short school paragraph, although real writing can place it elsewhere.
