Using although and however to show contrast – English 3AC

Connect contrasting ideas with although and however while using a complete, correctly punctuated sentence.

1. Although joins clauses

Although introduces a contrast within a sentence: «Although it was raining, we went out». The unexpected result is that we went out despite the rain.

2. However links statements

However often begins a new sentence: «It was raining. However, we went out». A semicolon is also possible between complete clauses before however. Do not join two complete sentences with only a comma before however in this pattern.

3. Choose one structure

Do not write «Although it was raining, but we went out» in this simple construction. Use although without but, or write «It was raining, but we went out».
